OVERVIEW
Melanotan 2 (MT2) is a synthetic analogue of alpha‑melanocyte‑stimulating hormone (α‑MSH), a naturally occurring peptide involved in regulating skin pigmentation. By binding primarily to melanocortin receptors such as MC1R, MT2 promotes the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. Increased melanin levels can result in a darker complexion and may provide some degree of protection against ultraviolet radiation. In research settings, MT2 is commonly supplied as a lyophilized powder, with 10 mg vials being a typical presentation. The powder is usually reconstituted with sterile or bacteriostatic water prior to laboratory handling. Beyond pigmentation, MT2 has been studied for potential effects on appetite regulation and libido due to its broader action on melanocortin receptors.
Despite its popularity in some tanning communities, Melanotan 2 is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for cosmetic or therapeutic use. Its safety profile has not been fully established through large‑scale clinical trials. Reported side effects include nausea, facial flushing, fatigue, and darkening of moles or freckles. Because it is often marketed online as a research chemical, product quality and purity may vary. Individuals should carefully consider potential health risks and legal implications before obtaining or using unregulated peptide compounds.
